India's tallest building to come up in Mumbai

Mumbai is to have India's tallest building -- a 101-storeyed tower for which the Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan gave in-principle approval today. This 526 meter-tall (1,725 feet) building proposed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is to come up in suburban Wadala and will be the third tallest building in the world.

"A detailed presentation of the 526-meter-long and 101-storeyed tower was made before Chief Minister today. He has approved the concept in-principle," Dilip Kawathkar, Joint Project Director of MMRDA, told PTI. "Further procedure to construct the building will begin soon," he said.

Proposed on a 1.4 lakh square meter plot, the project will cost Rs 4,128 crore and will fetch the government an annual lease rent of Rs 1800 crore, officials said. The other two tallest towers in the world are Burj Dubai (more than 2,000 feet) in UAE and Freedom Tower (1,776 feet) in New York city.

Construction of both the towers is underway. "The Wadala tower will have five floors reserved for parking and 16 floors for other essential services while the rest will accommodate various commercial establishments, recreation, academic and entertainment facilities," an official said.
